Join us for a leisurely brunch, prior to a quick ferry trip across the Yarra and a stroll through the
Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park
and Gallery .
No, this unique island in the Yarra doesn’t smell of fish – it’s named after 1950's scoutmaster
Sir Edmund Herring
. Only 3km from the city, Herring Island feels worlds away because it’s only accessible via a punt ferry on weekends and certain public holidays over summer.
On the Island, the
large-scale sculptures
blend subtly into their surroundings, reflecting that this was once a bluestone quarry. The park is a haven for nature and art lovers alike with a former scout hall now serving as an art gallery hosting the
Herring Island Summer Arts Festival
..
Before we head to the island, enjoy a leisurely brunch and some social chit chat at
Kanteen
. Kanteen is a converted toilet block situated on an S-bend of the Yarra river, but don't let this casual café's ancient history put you off as not only are the surroundings beautiful, but so is the food. The menu include the usuals breakfast fare such as eggs in various forms with accompanying sides, muesli and porridge as well as toast or croissants served with home made jams.
Look for your host at Kanteen. All food and drinks at own expense. Access to Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park & Gallery is by Parks Victoria’s punt service for which there is a charge of $2 per person, payable on the day.
For those keen to get the most out of the day we can stroll back to civilization alongside the Yarra River via the Yarra Trail. For those who ride, feel free to bring your bike!
